In 1750 the king of 2 Sicilies Charles of Bourbon could not stand the beauty and the mightiness of the French palace of Versailles, so he asked the architect Vanvitelli to build a bigger palace for him in the countryside of Campania. The Reggia (palace) was erected 40 km far from Naples (which was under constant attack of the English troups). Vanvitelli’s masterpiece is a palace of 1200 rooms and 1709 windows, 250 metre wide, 40 metres high, on a surface of 47.000 m2.
visiting the Reggia is easy, you find it in the middle of Campania, in a town called Caserta.
