Agropoli, a town south of the Amalfi coast, is famous for its ancient castle and being the “gateway” of Cilento. It’s also a place to find fine but traditional seafood restaurants like the Vecchio Saracino. Their food is so good that fixed even my bad headache!
I do believe that sitting a table with incredibly tasteful Italian food can fix any problem, but the location is also important. The atmosphere at Vecchio Saracino is relaxed but elegant, the waiters are very kind and experienced. The helped us choose the wine and told us about the cellars they had on the list. I really enjoy when a restaurant sommelier tells you more about the producers, besides the quality of the wine.
Getting to the Vecchio Saracino restaurant you need to pay attention. The entrance is a through a narrow alley (we missed the entrance sign on the street) . But at the end of it you will be welcomed in an open court with tables under orange trees, candle lights and promising smell of food.
They offer 2 à la carte lists with high quality ingredients. 1 with traditional dishes and 1 with modern gourmet dishes. We ordered a mix of both.
Our dinner started with 2 starters, a crudités dish from the gourmet list (different local raw fishes with different seasonings and sauces) and an octopus salad form the traditional list.
We continued with 2 main courses both from the gourmet lists. Pan seared tuna and a dish of calamari and squid cooked at low temperature for long time. All tasted amazing. We ended with a revised “torta caprese”, a typical cake form Campania with chocolate, almond and butter. The chef combined it with a lovely homemade custard and cherries. It looked so good that we ate it before we could take the picture!
