Like everybody, this summer I had to re-think how to enjoy my relaxing holiday despite Covid. That meant doing a lot of research to respect social distancing and finding something easy to cancel in case things changed.
I ended up having an amazing month in Marina di Casalvelino with my family. We enjoyed the holiday so much we already decided that we will do it again next year. Here are my top 5 tips to plan a great holiday with Covid.
- Search differently. Instead of the usual holiday websites like Airbnb and Booking.com, check the websites used by locals to sell/buy anything. You will find many holidays houses to rent at reasonable prices. I recommend idealista.com or subito.it
- Rent or use your car. In some part of Italy it’s much easier to go around by car than by public transport. Not to mention this year it will be also safer and more pleasant. Due to COVID, masks are mandatory on buses and trains. Renting a car with a driver is also not convenient as they are usually overpriced.
- Book a house/flat instead of a hotel. A house will get you the freedom of not having to wear masks anytime you meet people in the hotel and experience the real life of south of Italy. You will do the grocery shopping at the delicious deli around the corner, and have a refreshing aperitivo on your private balcony after a day at the beach. Some landlords also offer cleaning service or catering of food. You will definitely enjoy a relaxing holiday despite Covid.
- Domino approach – Ask tips to locals. Locals are the best source of real-life info, and they know very well what the best spots are in their town or in the towns nearby. So, here’s my domino approach: while you are on a trip somewhere, ask to the locals what else you can do in the area… you will get easily information to organize your next trip!
- Book your accommodation not in town centers On holiday it’s nice to stay close to the beach, the bars, the restaurants…but this usually comes at the price. Noise and higher prices. These could be ok for a week end break but if you are planning a long holiday it’s not ideal. My suggestion is to book your accommodation just outside the center. Preferably walking distances from it to enjoy a chilled time off with Covid.
